Laser dentistry, available at our Walnut Creek facility, is the latest advancement in dental technology, treating a wide range of dental and cosmetic problems from cavities to gum disease to teeth whitening. A special beam of light—or laser—is directed onto the problem areas, correcting decayed teeth, enamel, and gums. Many such lasers have been approved by the Food and Drug Administration Approval (FDA) and are safe for adults and children alike. To learn more about laser dentistry, consult our Walnut Creek office today.
The lasers we use in laser dentistry at our Walnut Creek-based practice are an alternative to the common hand-held scalpel or other tools. The laser uses an invisible energy beam to perform soft tissue procedures more efficiently and comfortably for our patients. Soft-tissue lasers are clean, delicate, and minimize the pain normally associated with regular dental visits.
This method causes little to no bleeding, swelling, infection or post-operative discomfort and also eliminates the need for most sutures (stitches). We find laser dentistry to be very effective at enhancing the quality of our dental care. To find out more about the comfortable, relaxing experience laser dentistry can provide, contact our Walnut Creek office today.
Thousands of Americans suffer from TMJ, which dentists refer to as myofascial pain. Neuromuscular dentistry seeks to remedy TMJ by restoring balance between the teeth, muscles, and joints. Unlike traditional dentistry, our neuromuscular work minimizes pain associated with TMJ by keeping the jaw in a relaxed position, rather then held open in a taut and uncomfortable way. It’s our belief that the muscles that move the jaw must be relaxed in order to avoid discomfort in the teeth and joints. To learn more about this innovative TMJ treatment, contact our Walnut Creek-based practice today.

Sleep dentistry is recommended to East Bay residents if they are apprehensive or anxious about the visiting the dentist's office. Periodontal, or gum, disease, is a serious disease that, in addition to ruining your beautiful smile, can lead to loss of teeth and other perilous health problems. Periodontal disease, called gingivitis in its early stages, is caused by the excessive accumulation of the bacteria found in plaque. These microorganisms assault your mouth’s soft tissues. In the early stage, gums become red, swollen, and start to bleed. Regular examinations and cleanings are essential to the prevention of gum disease because the dentist routinely checks for indications of gum disease during the exam. If caught early, the damage can potentially be reversed. If detected later, we can use one of the many effective cosmetic restoration and laser dentistry procedures offered at our Walnut Creek facility to bring back your healthy, beautiful smile. For more information, please contact our office today.
Root canals are designed to treat teeth that have suffered extensive pulp damage. Dental pulp is the soft mass extending from the crown of the tooth to the tooth’s root. It contains all the nerves and blood vessels of the tooth and supplies the tooth with the necessary nutrients. When the pulp is damaged, the soft pulp swells and can become infected, forming an abscess at the root of the tooth. If left untreated, the pulp dies, which is often followed by the death of the tooth. During a root canal procedure, the dentist numbs the tooth and surrounding tissue before he drills an opening into the crown of the tooth, exposing the damaged pulp inside the pulp chamber. The dentist cleans the pulp chamber by removing all the damaged and infected pulp. Once the pulp chamber is clear, it is filled and the tooth is permanently sealed off by a gold or porcelain crown. Ten years ago, Drs. Martz and Marshall elected to discontinue use of silver mercury fillings based on the fact that they contain mercury and because a better direct filling material was available for use in the molar tooth areas. Furthermore, based on years of clinical experience, Drs. Martz and Marshall realized that these silver mercury fillings damage teeth as they fail by cracking, splitting and potentially causing tooth loss, root canal, etc.
The best, direct bio-compatible metal free restoration is known as composite, which is a tooth-colored resin material. A composite resin is a tooth-colored bio-compatible restorative material, with the advantage (unlike amalgam) of bonding to the tooth structure to strengthen the tooth and fill the cavity.
