Sedation Dentistry - (FAQs)

Sedation dentistry is a great way for people who are scared of the dentist to be able to get the benefits of a dental visit without the fear. Many still have questions, however, about sedation dentistry. Below we will address some of the most frequently asked questions about sedation dentistry.

What is sedation dentistry?

Sedation dentistry is a way to get your dental procedures done without having to deal with your fear of dentists. Many people are scared of going to the dentist, and it can prevent them from getting the dental treatment that they need. If you have a fear of dentists, sedation dentistry offers a way of putting you to sleep so that you do not have to feel anything the dentist does, allowing you to relax as your dental procedures are performed.

How is it accomplished?

Sedation dentistry is accomplished through using a sedative drug that is given to the patient before any treatment has begun. Some sedative drugs are given though inhalation, others are given intravenously. However, if in addition to your fear of dentists you have a fear of needles, you can ask your dentist to give you a form of sedation dentistry that doesn’t involve IVs.

Is it painful?

Absolutely not! If you have an IV put in, you may feel a bit of pain when the IV is administered, but that’s it. If you choose to get another form of sedation, such as an inhaled sedative, you will feel absolutely no pain during the procedure.

How long will I be asleep?

It depends on which form of sedation you choose. Most patients are only asleep for an hour or two--just long enough to get their procedure completed and to wake up.

Is it safe?

Absolutely! A dentist who has been trained in providing patients with sedatives will be able to administer the drugs you need in a very safe manner. Just make sure that you tell the dentist if you have any medical issues before you have your dental procedure done.

Should I have someone drive me in?

You may want to have someone drive you into your appointment if you’ve chosen to have your dental procedures done under the use of sedatives.  Some people will feel a little groggy and may take a little while to fully wake up from their dental procedure, so err on the side of caution and ask someone drive you into your appointment.
